Arizona's Voice - See Me, Hear Me

On Monday April 15, 2013 I had the pleasure in accompanying Dani Polsom (Arizona'sVoice), to the Alberta Legislature along with her family and friends. What an amazing group of people...

Monday April 15th was actually my first time meeting Dani, and yet I felt a strong bond with her and also protective in a mothering kind of way. I was so proud of her as she took the podium and faced the media and their barrage of questions. That was a big moment for Dani and her family. Mum was standing there supporting her and also sharing her feelings. Victims of abuse have their own thoughts and nightmares to deal with but we mustn't forget the impact it has on our partners, family and friends.

Dani showed great strength and courage as she stood there in front of the reporters and cameras answering questions and telling her story of abuse, what an amazing young woman. I was so impressed and honoured for the opportunity to share that moment. Her words were encouraging and will give hope to others that have been sexually abused and may be facing the same dilemma as she once had...to tell or not!

Later that day MLA, Rob Anderson introduced Dani and the group in the legislature, Dani was greeted with more than the regular assembly welcome...she had all the members on their feet giving her a well-deserved standing ovation. That was an emotional moment but one that had a positive outcome.

The small group of determined family and friends that stood behind Dani, encouraged and supported her every step of the way. They believed her, believe in her, and obviously love her very much. That small group of people I'd want in my corner. All the hard work and determination paid off…the result was? Dani no longer has to hide behind a veil of secrecy, and is free to publicly reveal who she is and tell her story. I feel honoured that I was there to witness all that and what courage really looks like. Great job!

Dani you are a beautiful person, both inside and out and are an inspiration to others. You are a true survivor!
